綜合《華爾街日報》及其它媒體報道，據執法人員透露，張志東脫逃後搭乘私人飛機前往古巴，再轉機赴俄羅斯，試圖逃離美墨司法追捕。但俄方疑未查出其真實身分，拒絕其入境並勒令立即遣返古巴。古巴當局其後拘留張，並於週四（24日）將他引渡回墨西哥，再交給美方押解。
