叶挺与孙中山和大元帅府渊源甚深。1918年，他赴漳州参加援闽粤军。后来孙中山重回广州担任非常大总统，在陈炯明发动的“六一六”兵变中，他指挥警卫部队与叛军作战，守卫总统府前院，掩护宋庆龄脱险。
1923年，孙中山再次入主大元帅府，叶挺担任大元帅府宪兵司令部参谋长兼第一营营长。
